Susan Sarandon Out, Jessica Lange in for 'The Big Valley'
Filming set to begin in Baton Rouge in July
By Robert Falconer | Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Despite being in negotiations to star as matriarch Victoria Barkley in Daniel Adams' and Kate Edelman Johnson's big screen remake of the '60s TV oater The Big Valley, Susan Sarandon is no longer involved. Instead, actress Jessica Lange will don the corset originally worn by the late, great Barbara Stanwyck.

Production will begin on July 19 on location in Baton Rouge. Set in the 1870’s, The Big Valley is the dramatic story of a wealthy ranching family and their conflicts.

Written and directed by Adams, the screenplay was inspired by the original pilot from the TV series, but also employs new material. The new film is being executive produced by Kate Edelman Johnson, whose late father Louis F. Edelman created the series, and produced by Straw Weisman and Steven Brandman.

20th Century Fox has a "first look" deal with the production company for all North American rights. Arclight Films is handling the foreign rights sales. Fox currently distributes the original series, but so far only Season 1 and the first half of Season 2.

Lee Majors — who starred as Heath Barkley in the original series — recently announced that he will portray Thomas Barkley, the father of his original character, who, in the mythology of the story, died prior to the beginning of the 1965-69 series.

Jessica Lange seems like a solid choice for this part. Those who have followed her career since her debut in 1976's Dino De Laurentiis production of King Kong, know that the actress has amassed an impressive roster of character portrayals in her work, not the least of which includes Sweet Dreams, Blue Sky, Music Box, Frances, Country and Tootsie, along with an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of 'Blanche DuBois' in the TV production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

  • Lee and Farrah had planned a reunion project from radaronline.

Farrah Fawcett had planned to reunite with ex-husband Lee Majors on stage.

According to Lee's manager Denny Bond, the 'Charlie's Angels' star - who lost her battle with cancer last June - had been in secret talks about joining Lee in Las Vegas production 'Love Letters'.

The pair - who separated after six years of marriage in 1979 and had been estranged for two decades - would have played two ex-lovers who spend their entire lifetime trying to get back together.

Denny said: "We had many discussions with Lee and Farrah and we had planned on a Las Vegas opening and doing a Los Angeles charity performance for her soon to be established cancer foundation as the kick-off to the tour."

The show would have been produced and directed by Craig Nevius, the controversial filmmaker who is currently being sued by Farrah's estate over claims he leaked confidential information about the actress to the media.

The filmmaker confirmed he was going to be involved with the play, and says Farrah was very "excited" about the possible reunion.

He said: "'Love Letters' was the perfect stage play for the two of them. Lee would have played a conservative, no-nonsense politician who had been in love with his childhood sweetheart for decades.

"Farrah would have played his childhood sweetheart who grew up to be an eccentric, free-spirited artist. Farrah had a lot of ideas. She was excited about the whole thing. So was Lee."

Although the pair never got the opportunity to work together again, Lee was in contact again with Farrah before her death.

Craig added to Radar Online: "I'm sorry the two of them never got to work together again. But I am glad Farrah and Lee reconnected, in real life. That was important. I know it was to Farrah."
